The Marathon Des Sables

About the Marathon Des Sables

The MdS is a 6 day / 150 mile endurance race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco, starting on 9th April 2006.

During this time the competitors have to carry all their food, cooking equipment, sleeping bag/mat, survival equipment, etc over sand dunes and rocky desert in temperatures up to 120°F. If that's not bad enough we'll have to navigate the route with a map and compass, cook all my own meals and I won't get to shower until I finish. Oh, and apparently, your feet take such an incredible pounding that a full medical team specialising in gruesome foot injuries is flown out especially!

Why Am I Running the Marathon des Sables?

I have absolutely no idea, maybe I'll find out at the finish line.

But, what I do know is, the last time I went to Morocco I was on two wheels and had such a fantastic time blasting through the vast and awesome desert (I loved those dunes) that I vowed to return, although I wasn't thinking it would be like this.

I must add that although Sky Sports broadcasts highlights of the event each year, this has absolutely no bearing; I seek neither fame nor fortune.

The Charity I'm Supporting

If you embark on such an foolhardy adventure it seems only right to do some fundraising for a worthy cause. I have therefore, chosen to support a charity which I have been personally touched by, that being The Lions Hospice.

The Lions Hospice - The Lions Hospice cares for adults with life-threatening illnesses in Gravesend, Dartford, Swanley and surrounding villages.

If you would like to sponsor me please give online by following the Just Giving link below. This is easy, secure and tax efficient so I recommend it!

Alternatively, you can send monies to me and I will forward to the hospice or contact the hospice directly yourself.
